Speed in extreme lands
At any time of year, whether it is pouring with rain or the sun is shining splendidly, races and rallies of all imaginable kinds are held in Extremadura: on earth, asphalt, classic vehicles… And even the smallest villages, which take part in a continuous festival until the day the final trial, the queen of all competitions, arrives: the Extremadura Rally Championship, held usually near the end of the year. But you have to score before the day arrives. For months the drivers come together and gather thousands of people who come to see them racing in places like Plasencia, Jérez de los Caballeros, Mérida and Miajadas, where some of the region’s most important competitions are held to classify the best drivers.
There is no doubt that Internet has managed to publicise the Extremadura people’s love of speed through blogs, forums and web sites, but the passion has long been there. You only have to see the competitions with decades of history behind them, such as the Rally Norte Extremadura, now about to celebrate its 30 years.
It would be impossible to summarise the number of motor events taking place in the provinces of Cáceres and Badajoz in just a few lines, but the most important and best loved by fans are the Slalom Ciudad de Mérida, the Open Extremeño de Jerez de los Caballeros, the Rally Sprint Campanario and the Rally Clásico de Miajadas, which bring together cars that are now difficult to see in the streets and maybe do not travel at the speed of the most sophisticated models. But it is quite a luxury to one’s site to see some 600, old Ford Fiestas or Renault 5s now for years not built, testing out the driver’s skill, which is the real reason why so many people come to see the races, to see how man can dominate machine and challenges the clock.
